The state forest department will give out 1,000 ‘sparrow boxes’ to each of Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts to help save the bird. Several programmes would be held in the state to create awareness among the people. The Chief Minister would distribute the prizes on World Sparrow Day. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav himself set up a sparrow nest in his house.
Akhilesh Yadav on the World Sparrow Day would give away “Gauriya Mitra Puruskar” to those people who manage to attract and conserve the maximum number of sparrows in the state. The sparrow boxes to be used as nests for the little bird would be distributed mostly to the children and school students to help provide a safe habitat for the birds.
Today, the school children took oath to save sparrow. Tomorrow, on March 19 a national level seminar would be held in Lucknow while on the World Sparrow Day, programmes would be held at all the places in the state.
UP Chief Forest Conservator (Wild Life) Rupak De said the government has planned to distribute the birdhouses across the state and they have being designed “scientifically” to attract sparrows. The houses would be made of natural wood without any chemical treatment. The birdhouses would have a 3.2 cm hole, which is big enough for a sparrow to enter.
According to a UP government’s website “Five species of sparrow are found in India out of which 3 species are found in Uttar Pradesh.” Explaining the importance of conserving sparrows, another forest official said, “This bird helps in killing insects present in our homes. Sparrows feed on worms that cause grave harm to crops. It helps in maintaining biodiversity.”
