On the occasion of the International Women’s Day on March 8, Uttar Pradesh government has gifted women a helpline number ‘181’ to the fairer sex of the state for their benefit. The new 24X7 helpline will provide police, medical, legal and other facilities through this new service. Presently the state capital has 1090 women powerline to deal with the crime and harassment of the women.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav, an MP from Kannauj inaugurated this Asha Jyoti 181 helpline in 11 districts of the state. A private GVK-EMRI company which is running the 102 and 108 ambulances in the state has been entrusted to run the women helpline in the state.
As per the details, UP women 181 helpline will provide temporary shelter to the women when needed, immediate help to them during domestic violence, legal and other consultation. A modern call centre is being constructed in Lucknow by the company while a Senior Administrative Official is monitoring the progress.
After the success of 1090, the Government has decided to set up new helpline to provide security to the women along with rescue vans associated with the centres. CM Akhilesh Yadav and Dimple Yadav also inaugurated Asha Jyoti Canteen managed by Mahila Sahayata Samuh.
In Bareilly, Asha Jyoti Kendra will temporarily be operated from a few rooms situated inside the office of additional director health, and later, it will be shifted behind the city mental hospital. Confirming the upcoming development, District Probation Officer Usha Tiwari said, “The Asha Jyoti Kendra is planned to come up near the building of the city mental hospital. The centre will be equipped with a trauma counselling cell and a legal aid cell for effective counselling and legal help of women.
For helping the distressed women, who seek professional care, the helplines Women powerline-1090, Childline-1098 and Ambulance service-108 will be connected to each other. Besides, police, health and other departments will coordinate with Asha Jyoti Kendra. However, a district steering committee will run these centres and the committee members will include senior superintendent of police, chief medical officer, secretary of district legal service authority, prosecution officer, official of national information commission, district treasurer and representative of lead bank. Besides, district probation officer will be the secretary of the committee.
The significance of effective helplines is widely recognised in Uttar Pradesh and has a long way to go.
