“We will create a Green Legacy.” ~ Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Minister Uttar Pradesh
On this ‘World Population Day’, Uttar Pradesh Government is all set to launch a massive plantation drive across the state under the “Clean UP Green UP” campaign. This plantation drive is a sustained effort to increase the Green Cover in the state. Under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav, plantation of 5 Crore saplings would be carried out at 6,000 sites across the state within the next 24 hours.
Active Participation in Plantation Drive
The initiative would give a boost to Uttar Pradesh’s ‘Clean UP, Green UP’ Mission. Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav will take active part in the mega plantation drive, under which the state government plans to plant 5 Crore saplings today, across the state to set break their own Guinness World Record of planting 10 lakh saplings in 8 hours.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav will plant saplings at Rasoolabad in Kanpur district and his wife Dimple Yadav at Kannauj, in plantation programmes organised by the Forest department. While Mulayam Singh Yadav would plant saplings at Kukrail forest reserve and the saplings would be planted in the areas which are free from encroachments. Around 5, 50, 000 people will actively participate in the event and the plantation would be carried out at 6,166 sites in the state.
7 Crore Saplings ready to go
The plantation would mostly be done on government land, forest land, and degraded forest land. More than 80 species of 7 crore saplings, raised in 950 nurseries would be planted across 6000 sites. The species include mango, tamarind, mahua, pakad, neem, bargad, and peepal apart from others.
A Transparent Plantation Drive
After the event, anyone can check the data on their computers regarding plantation sites, the species planted and the condition of the plants. The Guinness record auditors have already reached the sites and the audit will be done by a third party involving teachers, students, and non-governmental organisations.
Uttar Pradesh government has roped in The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) for carrying out carbon sequestration connected with the exercise. Under this, TERI will measure the carbon units absorbed which can be used for getting carbon credits in future.
Last year the state had earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the state government’s green drive under which 10 lakh saplings were planted within a span of eight hours. The certificate for UP’s record-setting performance was awarded to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
A recent Forest Survey Report released by the Government of India shows a 261 square km increase in forest and tree covers in Uttar Pradesh. The report attributes better plantation and better protection of the plants which is indeed a proud moment for us!
