Safety of Women under the governance of the young Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav has always been the topmost priority. His works have contributed a lot to the empowerment of women and have also helped them feel secure in the state. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government is currently running several schemes and initiatives that are ensuring the safety and welfare of Women in Uttar Pradesh.
We researched on some of the best women-centric initiatives by UP CM Akhilesh Yadav.
‘1090 – Women Power Line’
Uttar Pradesh government under the progressive leadership of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav launched “1090 – Women Power Line” on November 15, 2012. It is an IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) technology based service provider to help women and girls who are troubled or strained in Uttar Pradesh. This power line is successfully being operated by Uttar Pradesh Police Department headed by Navneet Sekera.
Complaints against harassment, fake calls, domestic violence, harassment over internet and eve-teasing can be lodged easily through ‘1090 Women Power Line’. There are a number of ways to lodge a complaint, i.e., either the complainant can dial 1090 number or can communicate through Whatsapp on 9454401090 number for help. Complaint can also be lodged online by logging into www.1090up.in. Also smartphone users can download the android application, ‘Shakti App’. This app helps victim to send audio and video clips directly to Uttar Pradesh Police control room.
Achievements of ‘Women Power Line–1090’ by Uttar Pradesh Government
Inspector General of the 1090 Women Power Line, Navneet Sekera informed that till now the helpline has solved around 3,88,658 cases from 2012 and July 2015 successfully. About 1,26,642 complaints were lodged from girl students, 28,000 complaints from women who are working and about 80,000 complaints of other women have been received (till July 9th 2014).

- Calls are received by Women Police officers also called as ‘Power Angels’
- The victims are kept in touch until the problem has been resolved
- Women Power Helpline – 1090 is applicable for all the regions of Uttar Pradesh
Asha Jyoti Line – 181
Among many women safety initiatives in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav, MP from Kannauj inaugurated ‘Asha Jyoti 181 Helpline’ on March 8, 2016 on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The centers of Asha Jyoti Line were launched in Bareilly, Agra, Meerut, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Kannauj, Lucknow, Allahabad, Gorakhpur and Varanasi districts as a pilot project of Uttar Pradesh government.
Asha Jyoti Line -181 works for women who are victims of rape or acid attack or facing domestic violence. The helpline also provides counselling, medical aid, legal aid and police assistance as well.
A district leading committee runs Asha Jyoti centers and the committee member include Senior Superintendent of Police, Secretary of District Legal Service Authority, Chief Medical Officer, Prosecution Officer, National Information Commission Officer, representative of bank and District Treasurer. Police, health and many other departments work in coordination with Asha Jyoti Kendra.
Other facilities which are provided to the victims are skill development, women empowerment, bank facilities, accommodation for victims of violence, working women hostel etc.
Rani Lakshmi Bai Mahila Samman Kosh
Rani Lakshmi Bai Mahila Samman Kosh Yojna was launched by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government to ensure help for women in the state with any means needed.
Mahila Samman Kosh ensures Monetary and Medical relief including recreation surgeries to women or girls who are victims of violence and also works for providing educational assistance, children of such victims are also given educational and medical facilities when required by Uttar Pradesh government for the safety of women.
The role of this scheme is to provide aid for women/girls who may not be a direct victim of violence but require economic and social empowerment. This is one of the most successful women safety initiative currently running by Uttar Pradesh government.
These successfully running initiatives are bringing about a great transformation in the lives of the women of Uttar Pradesh. They can now feel more powerful and safe under the Samajwadi government’s effective governance.
