If rumours are to be believed, Noida will soon host IPL matches. According to sources, Greater Noida Stadium might act as the home ground for a new IPL franchise starting next year.
Earlier this week, the Indian Premier League decided to introduce two new teams in the tournament for its 2016 edition to replace the suspended Chennai and Rajasthan franchises. Sources say that Kanpur is one of the cities shortlisted for the new teams.
Kanpur is a strong contender for an IPL franchise as it is also the hometown of the IPL chairman, Rajeev Shukla. However, it is not Kanpur’s Green Park but Greater Noida Stadium that will end up hosting the home games for Kanpur.
Last year, Shukla had ruled out Green Park Stadium as a potential venue for IPL games citing a lack of infrastructure in the city. It seems Kanpur’s loss might be Greater Noida’s gain.
A senior official at Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association told us, “Greater Noida is developed in terms of infrastructure and connectivity. It is just an hour’s drive from Delhi and has a number of good hotels where teams can stay. Additionally, it has hosted the Formula One Grand Prix in the past which means it is not new to hosting big sporting events. All these things are in the city’s favour.” Officials at the Greater Noida Stadium, however, are keeping mum on the issue. They neither confirm nor deny the development.
However, Shukla was in Noida this Monday accompanying Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden on his visit to the city. During the visit, he reviewed the facilities at the Greater Noida Stadium for its suitability to host IPL matches. Cricket fans in the city will certainly be keeping their fingers crossed, hoping that IPL makes a pit stop in Noida.
