SHAHJAHANPUR: The pradhan of a village, who is a doctor and runs his own hospital, treated a poor patient in coma for free for a month when everybody else had almost given him up for dead. After the man made a miraculous recovery, the pradhan is being hailed as a hero.
Maniram, a 45-year-old Dalit labourer, met with an accident in July and went into coma due to serious head injuries. CT scans had shown that there was a blood clot in his brain and his jaw was broken. The district hospital here had asked his family to shift him to Lucknow immediately as he needed to be on a ventilator all the time and only a higher centre could provide this facility.
Expected expenses for the treatment were between Rs 4 and 5 lakh, impossible for the poor Dalit family to arrange. At this tough time, Dr Pradeep Shukla stepped in. Shukla, who is the pradhan of Navadia Mankanth village and also runs a hospital in Khuthar, admitted Maniram at his hospital and provided him all the emergency medical services free of cost for over a month. Maniram gained consciousness recently and his condition is stable now.
Maniram was brought to the Surya Hospital in Khuthar block and his treatment started there. The patient was kept in the ICU under observation for more than a month.
“Being a doctor, my principal duty is to save human lives. I saw Maniram dying, so I offered treatment at my hospital. I knew it was a great risk but there was no other option as such a huge amount of money was not possible for the family to arrange. We shifted him to our ICU and started his treatment under the supervision of our experts. Now a miracle has indeed happened,” Shukla told TOI on Monday.
“While most of the expenses for the treatment were borne by the hospital, some locals also contributed voluntarily,” Shukla added.
