With an aim to bring about effective rural development, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav launched the affordable housing scheme ‘Lohia Awas Yojna’ in Uttar Pradesh. This housing scheme was initiated to develop the villages and provide well-constructed homes to the rural population of the state. Ensuring housing and basic amenities to the most backward villages of Uttar Pradesh, Lohia Awas Yojna has come like a blessing to many.

Lohia Awas Yojna is one of the most popular flagship projects of Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh. Under this scheme, government provides 100% financial assistance to families having an annual income of less than Rs. 36,000.
The distribution of Awas is done in the favour of female candidates of the selected beneficiary family. In case of unavailability of wife or any other female candidate, the widower is entitled to receive the benefits.
The selected beneficiaries also get funds for construction of clean toilet from Panchayati Raj department.
All categories of people are entitled to receive the benefits of this housing scheme. The funds are transferred into the bank account of selected beneficiary in two instalments of 50-50 percent.
Interesting Facts About Lohia Awas Yojna
The main objective of this scheme is to bring backward villages into mainstream which are lagging behind in infrastructure development such as link roads, rural electrification, availability of potable water, sanitary latrines etc.
Here are some priorities under which the beneficiaries get selected:
- Family and widow of Martyr of army, and other armed force.
- SC/ST and such families in which widow or single unmarried is available.
- Physically handicapped, mentally disturbed SC/ST candidates
- Persons affected from earthquake, flood or any other natural disasters.
There is no maximum age limit for apply Lohiya Awas yojana.
All constructions of homes are done through the official map specified for Lohia Awas Yojna. Layout and sizes of the rooms are changeable according to the need of beneficiaries but construction of two rooms is mandatory under the scheme.
How to Apply for Lohia Awas Yojna?
All candidates who hold the eligibility criteria under Lohia Awas Yojna can fill application forms. The forms are made available free of cost in the offices of concerned gram panchayats. After verification, the forms are forwarded to Block Development Office of the concerned block and then to the Chief District Offices.
People who have been benefitted under Lohia Awas Yojna consider it ‘A Dream Come True’ and they say that they could only dream of building such houses by their own means. This great step of providing affordable houses to BPL families of Uttar Pradesh would not have been possible without the efforts of CM Akhilesh Yadav.
