Creating an environment for women where they can make decisions for their own as well as for the society is essential to build stronger economies. Women empowerment is improving the social, economic, political and legal strength of the women, to ensure equal-right to women, and to make them confident enough to claim their rights.
Uttar Pradesh government under the leadership of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has focused substantially on the safety and development of women by ensuring successful implementation of many women empowerment initiatives. A number of powerful steps have been taken by the young CM which have made the women of Uttar Pradesh powerful, confident, happy and empowered like than even before.
Let’s take a quick glimpse of the historical steps taken by Akhilesh Yadav that make him so popular and trusted amongst the women of Uttar Pradesh.
Samajwadi Pension Yojna – Giving Power to Household Women
Samajwadi Pension Yojna is a scheme to encourage savings among people living below poverty line and provide them financial assistance. As part of this scheme, Rs 500 per month is being provided to poor women, covering at least 55 lakh beneficiaries in the state by now.
This scheme recently saw the support of Bollywood actress Vidya Balan. Praising this revolutionary step she said “This scheme will have a direct impact on the lives of people and I am happy to be the face of it.” ~ Vidya Balan
1090 Women Powerline – Empowering Women, Ensuring Safety
To give women strength and courage to women in UP, the state government launched a bold initiative “1090 Women Powerline” and 1090 mobile app. This toll-free helpline was launched on November 2012 and has been a remarkable success. It has been praised by media and celebrities alike, for offering immediate relief to women being harassed by anyone.
From November 2012 to June 2016, a total of 5,64,370 complaints have been lodged by women through the helpline. Out of these complaints, 5,58,000 complaints have been resolved from different parts of UP by this helpline.
Awards and Recognition of Exemplary Contribution by Women
The decision of the state government to honour bravery of women from different walks of life-from female IPS officer, a constable, a gram pradhan to a social worker and ASHA worker, has been historic and commendable. The decision to establish ‘Rani Laxmi Bai Veerta Award’ for women was taken by the CM in November 2014. Every year on March 8 i.e. on the occasion of International Women’s Day, women and girls in UP who have shown exemplary bravery and who have achieved special accomplishments are awarded with Rani Laxmi Bai Veerta Award.
Rani Laxmi Bai Samman Kosh – A Unique Fund for Women
Establishing Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Samman Kosh is a pointer towards the sensitivity of the Akhilesh Yadav government in UP in understanding the problems faced by women. The current financial state budget for the year 2015-16 has provision of Rs 100 crore for this fund. As part of this initiative, arrangements have been made to provide financial and medical aid to women who have been victims of various crimes.
Support for Acid Attack Survivors
The state government has provided priority to acid attack survivors in government jobs by employing them in Rani Laxmi Bai Asha Jyoti Centres as per their educational qualifications. They are also being supported under the Samajwadi Pension Scheme. This financial support is a positive sign towards their empowerment.
Other good practices like Dampatti Puraskar Yojna, Hamari Beti Uska Kal, Aasha Jyoti Kendra, Pink autos for Lucknow eves for a safe ride and Sheroes hangout to acid attack victims are the provisions that Uttar Pradesh government has gifted to women.
