“Clean UP Green UP and State Nutrition Mission are top priorities.” ~ Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav
Can Clean Environment and Nutrition Mission symbolize a broader political message? If you peep through the eyes of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the answer is yes! Two years back when the state was facing a rise in maternal and infant mortality rate, Akhilesh Yadav launched State Nutrition Mission.
Be it planting 5 crore saplings or setting new targets for Nutrition, the youngest Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has always something great to offer. He never indulges in the ducks and drakes of politics. Today when political parties are playing blame games, our environmentalist is busy in taking care of people and ecology.
Uttar Pradesh Nutrition Mission
Uttar Pradesh Nutrition Mission aims at improving the standards of general health and immunity among children, adolescents and expectant mothers. The mission is being supported by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and another organization named Citizens Alliance Against Malnutrition which aims at eradicating malnutrition children in the state. Special cleanliness targets have also been incorporated in the mission.
Decline in MMR and IMR
Akhilesh Yadav government is keen to tackle malnutrition through the State Nutrition Mission and wants to improve the health of the people. Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate were alarmingly high in the state when he assumed power but in the last couple of years they had shown marked decline. Several other health schemes like M-Sehat and 102 Ambulance Service have also been launched by Akhilesh Yadav.
Nutrition Mission director of Maharashtra, Vandana Krishna, narrated how her state had decreased the MMR and IMR by around 12.5 per cent during the last six years.
Hausla Poshan Yojna
Today, CM Akhilesh Yadav has launched ‘Hausla Poshan Yojna’ under which pregnant women and malnourished children would be provided cooked food and one fruit each. Under the scheme, consultation would also be provided to mothers of malnourished children in the age group of seven months to three years along with facility of regular weight check.
For effective implementation of the scheme, Akhilesh Yadav has recently adopted a village in Shravasti district under the State Nutrition Mission. 7843 Gram Sabhas have also been adopted under the mission.
The government has decided to include nutrition as a subject in curriculum of basic education department from the academic session 2016-17. The government have also endorsed media to support the nutrition mission to create awareness among the people.
