It’s roadshow versus roadshow in Varanasi today. In the ancient temple town by the Ganga, anyone can see huge crowds gathered in the joint roadshow by Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi. When Dimple Yadav joined them, the electrifying crowd cheered them up with joy. It seems that Modi’s prestige is at stake in his own parliamentary constituency Varanasi, as the crowd in AY-RG roadshow is at-least double the crowd in PM’s roadshow.
Last month, BJP chief Amit Shah and other ministers including JP Nadda, Avi Shankar Prasad, Manoj Sinha, Smriti Irani, Narendra Singh Tomar, Kalraj Mishra, Ananth Kumar and Mahendra Nath Pandey were seen sweating in and out the city.
Despite fielding several candidates in Varanasi, BJP’s traditional support among upper castes may prove critical in the last two phases of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. People are seeing the hope in Akhilesh, who has done all-round development that has led to sustained results in Uttar Pradesh.
Let’s evaluate some reasons for the massive success of Akhilesh’s roadshow in the holy city of Kashi.
Commencement of Metro Rail Project in Varanasi
Akhilesh Yadav is the one who requested the central government to approve Varanasi metro. He wrote a letter to the Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu for issuing the official notification for metro projects in Kanpur and Varanasi as the state plans to commence the construction. Two metro corridors have also been planned in Varanasi in which RITES was engaged to prepare the project report.
Varanasi Among the Most Popular Cities in the Heritage Arc
With an aim to boost tourism in Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav government established The Heritage Arc, which provides an opportunity to explore the state in all its glory. Moving on this arc from one end of the state to the other, takes travellers through Varanasi, Lucknow and Agra with several exciting destinations along the way.
Setting Up of Amul Dairy Plants in Varanasi
Akhilesh Yadav invited Amul for dairy development in Uttar Pradesh. He offered 30-acres land to Amul to set up a plant in Varanasi with the production capacity of 5 lakh litres per day. Akhilesh Yadav helped Amul increase its footprint in UP, which is now India’s largest milk producing state.
24-Hour Electricity to Varanasi
Akhilesh Yadav government is providing 22 to 24-hour electricity in Varanasi. In fact, UP’s electricity targets are far ahead of centre. According to the Centre’s norms for identifying villages for rural electrification programme, Uttar Pradesh has 97,000 revenue villages where electrification was to be completed. The NDA government has set a target of achieving 100% electrification of revenue villages by 2018. However, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has electrified all the revenue villages in 2016 claiming to have completed the state’s target; nearly 2 years before the Centre’s deadline.
Traffic Control System in Varanasi
A per the Samajwadi Party’s 2017 manifesto, Varanasi soon will have a State-of-the-Art traffic management system, for which Uttar Pradesh Cabinet is likely to install the most advanced system to manage traffic on the way.
All New Riverfront and Other Major Projects
Akhilesh Yadav government is committed to regain the glory of rivers in UP and just like Gomti, Varanasi will soon get a world class riverfront. Remote Sensing Technology and Computer Modelling Techniques would be employed to analyse the environmental impact of the project when it is completed.
The government is also planning to build Cycle Highway, Skill Development Centre, Saree Design Centre and Entrepreneurship Development Programmes in Varanasi.
In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency is ranked among the country’s ten dirtiest cities in 2016. BJP has no work on ground to show in Varanasi, and this time PM Modi’s loyal voters are upset.
While demonetisation and the achhe din gimmicks have tainted the reputation of the BJP-led central government, the Akhilesh Yadav’s quite visible ‘Kaam’ in Uttar Pradesh seems to be a great crowd puller in Uttar Pradesh.
No wonder, #बनारस_कहे_Akhilesh_Akhilesh
