Uttar Pradesh has witnessed great steps taken by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to enhance health and medical facilities in the state. His government has worked well on various initiatives to provide free education and better health facilities in the state. Here are some health initiatives undertaken by his government:
170 National Mobile Medical Units
The state government has introduced National Mobile Medical Unit scheme in 36 districts under which 170 National Mobile Medical Units will be made operational. This scheme will be implemented through Public-Private Partnership and the mobile units will have facility of vaccination and carrying out basic tests. It will also give basic medicines to the patients. Each unit will have a doctor, a pharmacist, lab assistant and a nurse. In the initial phase this scheme will be implemented in 36 districts including Kannauj, Rampur, Lucknow, Azamgarh, Kanpur and Varanasi.
Hausla Poshan Yojna
Akhilesh Yadav government has recently launched ‘Hausla Poshan Yojna’ under which pregnant women and malnourished children would be provided cooked food and one fruit each. Under the scheme, consultation would also be provided to mothers of malnourished children in the age group of seven months to three years along with facility of regular weight check.
For effective implementation of the scheme, Akhilesh Yadav has recently adopted a village in Shravasti district under the State Nutrition Mission. 7843 Gram Sabhas have also been adopted under the mission.
Merger of Ram Manohar Lohia Institute and Lohia Hospital
Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences have been merged and the merger will expand the institute’s capacity from 350 beds to 1,000 beds. It will have both primary and super-speciality patient care services. It will also start an MBBS course from next year.
The merger is an important step towards the making of the second government-aided medical institution offering MBBS course other than King George’s Medical University in Lucknow.
With the merger, the institute will have a functional kidney transplant unit, making the institute the third in Lucknow along with Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and KGMU to be performing renal transplant. By the next year, the institute will also offer medical education right with the proposed 150 MBBS seats to be included after Medical Council of India’s (MCI) approval.
Appointment of Ayurvedic, Unani and Homeopathic Doctors
Uttar Pradesh government has posted several doctors possessing degrees in Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy in district hospitals across the state. The government has also appointed several Ayush doctors who were sacked by previous government in the state.
Akhilesh Yadav government has set up Uttar Pradesh Nutrition Mission which aims at improving the standards of general health and immunity among children, adolescents and expectant mothers. Special cleanliness targets have also been incorporated in the mission. Other initiatives like M-Sehat, Ambulance Services, huge investment in King George Medical University for the expansion of technology, Mid-Day Meal Scheme, Free Health Check-ups in state hospitals, free dialysis, establishment of medical colleges and oncology wards, special grants to cancer patients and children have taken up successfully by his government.
