 Uttar Pradesh has emerged as an eco-friendly state under the leadership of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. He has launched massive plantation drive across the state and several award winning green initiatives. A list of significant Green-drives that have been running successfully in the state includes plantation drive, cycle tracks, and cycle highway, Asia’s largest green park, greenfield expressway, Hindon river rejuvenation project, peacock sanctuary at Vrindavan, tiger reserve, bird festival, agro parks, polythene ban and recycling of floral offerings. We will discuss the green initiatives in two parts.

Plantation Drive

Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav has earned itself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the state’s green drive under which 10 lakh saplings were planted in one day within eight hours. This performance setting certificate was awarded to Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh – Akhilesh Yadav.

Recently, on the World Population Day 2016, Uttar Pradesh Government launched a massive plantation drive across the state under the Clean UP Green UP campaign. The plantation drive was a sustained effort to increase the Green Cover in the state. Under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav, plantation of 5 Crore saplings has been carried out at 6,000 sites across the state within 24 hours.

Cycle Tracks across the State and Cycle Highway

In order to introduce an eco-friendly mobility solution, our Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has decided to include cycle tracks in the planning of new towns. Cycle tracks in Lucknow and Agra have already been constructed and the department is engaged in construction of similar tracks in cities like Noida, Varanasi, Kanpur, and Allahabad.

Apart from cycle tracks, Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (UPPWD) has come up with an alignment of the highway under which a 190 km long Greenfield ‘Cycle-Highway’ between Agra and Lion Safari is being constructed. The highway has been dedicated only for cycles.

Janeshwar Mishra Park

Janeshwar Mishra park is Asia’s largest Green Park located in Gomti Nagar extension, Lucknow. This state-of-the-art green park was made in the memory of late Janeshwar Mishra and inaugurated by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on August 05, 2014. The park has been spread around 376 acres is a multi-functional environmental green that provides sustainable habitat for various species of birds.

Greenfield Expressway

Agra Lucknow expressway which is also known as greenfield expressway is one of the biggest job creators in Uttar Pradesh. Financed by the government of Uttar Pradesh, the expressway has been created upon minimum distance and minimal agricultural formula. It is the longest greenfield expressway in the country and is going to become the lifeline of the 10 districts and lakhs of people living along it.

The expressway will carry all public amenities viz. under passes, service roads, provision for green belt, rest houses, petrol pumps, service centres, restaurants, and four agricultural mandis for milk, potatoes, grains, fruits, and vegetables. The work has also started on its landscaping, complete with trees and fountains throughout the belt.

Revival of Hindon River

The ‘Hindon River Rejuvenation’ is a transformational program to clean River Hindon that originates in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.  The river is a tributary of Yamuna and flows through Saharanpur, Muzzafarnagar, and Meerut. Win an aim to clean this river, Uttar Pradesh government along with Water Resources Group (WRG) would work jointly to revive the rain-fed river.

Peacock Sanctuary in Vrindavan

Uttar Pradesh government has recently sanctioned a project to set up peacock sanctuary in Vrindavan, as peacocks suffered due to shrinking green cover. The state government has released funds to the Forest Department to start the peacock conservation centre in which water holes a habitat for the peacocks will also be constructed.  The sanctuary will be situated between Mathura and Vrindavan.
